Cynical Doylist answer: Unlimited Blade Works is not really Rin’s route; narratively speaking, it’s constructed to focus on Archer’s feelings and Shirou’s relationship with him, rather than Rin’s feelings and Shirou’s relationship with her. Therefore, Rin forgives Archer without any discussion of the pain he caused her because the text prioritizes and centers Archer’s story over Rin’s.

That’s not really all of it, though.

Sympathetic Watsonian answer: Rin is naturally a kind and forgiving person when it comes to those she considers hers to look after and take care of. While she’s not generally and indiscriminately selfless the way Shirou attempts to be (and at no point does she adopt that attitude for its own sake), she is capable of great personal sacrifice for the people she sees as her responsibility. She even sets aside her enmity for Shinji because she (mistakenly) believes Sakura will be happier if he lives.

By the end of Unlimited Blade Works, Rin has made Shirou and by extension Archer her responsibility in life.

More than that, after dreaming repeatedly of Archer’s life and true nature, Rin knows how his mind works. She knows that he’s capable of deadening his emotions and appearing to be cruel and uncaring even though he actually cares a great deal. In all likelihood, she’s quite aware that he never intended for her to be truly hurt–she’d have noticed that he kept hedging his cruelties to her with “you have to let those two [Shirou and Rin] escape” or “don’t touch her before I say you can or I’ll kill you.”

Given that Rin viscerally knows thanks to a psychic link showing her Archer’s true nature in her dreams that he means well in his twisted way, it’s probably a lot easier to forgive him for being an asshole.

Really, though, it comes down to her being young, abruptly in love with a very complicated man, and briefly acting with her heart instead of her head. Rin is ultimately very good at being a cold and rational person when she has to be, but she has a kind heart in the end and it’s not always wise.

After separating from Jesse, we get the story of Walt murdering ten imprisoned men in two minutes followed by Walt taking on the role of kingpin in his own international million dollar drug organisation - all in a couple of sweeping montages. Some fans have complained bitterly about the writers fast forwarding through this part of the story. However this narrative choice just confirms to me that this is a show about Walt and Jesse’s partnership more than it’s a show about Heisenberg’s meth empire. If Walt and Jesse are not together, then the story is missing its heart and soul.

“Did someone call for a ‘tall, dark, and handsome’ servant? Because that’s not me, I’m actually a ‘jerk, asshole, and a total bastard’ servant. Watch me as I brood around and act like a totally logical person when all my actions are emotionally charged. People really don’t change, you know? I’ve also never learnt my lesson, ever. Man, do ladies love me. Too bad I hate myself enough to put every emo on this earth to shame. Seriously, I should get an award or something for all this moody-ness.”

[uh.. Rin, you’re being exceptionally mean to Archer. perhaps you should sto–]

“No. He pissed me off. He’s getting what he deserves. Where was I…? Ah, yes, I also put all those born under the sign of Cancer to shame with my incredibly moody attitude. Who knows what I’m feeling one moment, cause it won’t matter in the next. And man am I hypocrite! Sure I hate Goldy, but I’m gonna copy his NP because why not. I mean, if I was gonna copy any servant’s NP, it might as well be the one belonging to the strongest servant, right? Right.”

    [….. Rin pls…]

“Ugh, I’m so cool, so powerful, I could take on everyone in this war but all I want to do is kill my past self. Forget about following reasonable strategic orders, going against my master’s commands and betraying her over and over again is the way to go to achieving my wish. Yes, truly, I am the best servant.”

    […..done?]

  • I’m sentimental to the core. If she’d just been a bit more callous, I never would have reverted to my old self.
